Katie's Rock
Katie Schaffer is a single mother who slings drinks for a living. Her parents are gone, leaving her alone to care for her four year old son and a cocker spaniel with more energy than brains. When she meets Arizona ranchers Jake and David McAllister, the two handsome brothers both go into a full-court-press to win Katie's affections. She quickly chooses Jake, but soon finds the road to love is a whole lot rockier than she expected. Jake is still raw from his divorce and is struggling with the pain of having his family torn apart. If she loses Jake, Katie stands to lose the entire McAllister family. Not only has she come to love them very much, but this would be the second family Katie has lost. Will Jake commit to Katie? Did Katie choose the wrong McAllister brother? If she loses Jake, can Katie survive losing her second family in three years?

My thoughts

Katie's Rock was a captivating read. It brings forth the age old dilemma of following your head or heart, and furthermore, how do you fix it if you make the wrong decision? Katie is a sassy, no nonsense, single mom who literally makes you laugh out loud from the thoughts and perspectives she has on her life. In an age where you drown yourself in ice cream because of a divorce or a bad break up, Katie shows us all how to strap up our cowboy boots and jump back on the horse. Of course, after  a few beers to mend that broken heart.

Although it was a small part in the story, I loved the relationship Katie has with her ex-husband. It was refreshing to see a couple that could get a long and work together to be parents for their son. One of the attributes that makes readers fall in love with Katie is the love she has for her son Dustin. Katie is a true parent in the fact that she often questions if she is doing the right thing for her son. These thoughts add layers you will peel away when it comes to Katie's life.

More often than not, I found myself feeling like I was reading a letter from a friend on what was happening in her life. Having that personal connection will make you want to be there to hold Katie's hand when she cries and have a beer with her to celebrate. This type of personality is exactly the reason Katie finds herself between the ranch owning McAllister brothers. When she meets Jake he is everything she could ask for but then an equally handsome brother who is the exact opposite in personality, adds confusion as Katie struggles through the book on doing what she thinks is right, while questioning her decisions every step of the way. Should she alter her fiery manner to work with one brother or should she embrace her long lost farm girl attitude with the other?

I loved this book and would highly recommend it for anyone who is looking for a great read. Kayce Lassiter does an amazing job with the flow of the story and keeps you laughing with her witty banter. This contemporary cowgirl fiction will leave you wanting to take a trip to the ranch, of course, wearing your red cowgirl boots.
